Heard Good and Bad Reports on Laminate?
Laminate flooring is a product which is created by layering thin sheets of decorative material over a synthetic base. This can be made to mimic the likes of stone, tiles or wood, and it will usually be covered with a layer of sealant to stop it from breaking down. A good example of this type of flooring is Pergo from Scandinavia, however, due to its growing popularity, several companies now manufacture this product.
The benefit with this flooring is that it is cheaper than the product it is attempting to mimic. In other words, the cost of installing a solid wood floor can get quite expensive, however, laminate can be designed to look like this and cheap to buy. Laminate is designed to be easy to install, and homeowners that have little construction experience can install this flooring with relative ease, so a professional flooring contractor will not be needed, which means it is appealing to most consumers.
Some companies make laminate using recycled material, this is another feature which appeals to eco-conscious homeowners. Whether it is from using new or recycled materials, laminate is now available in plank form which needs to be fitted together. Some snap together very similar to a puzzle, however, others will need to be glued or nailed down. Also, you will need to install a subflooring material beneath laminate, in order to reduce the noise and moisture levels.
The biggest disadvantage with this flooring is that it is not the real thing. Even though today’s laminate is quite durable, they will never be as sturdy as the flooring products they are imitating. Some styles are susceptible to water damage, and once the laminate is scuffed, the base beneath will be exposed. Fortunately, modern laminates are nothing like their earlier versions, and many companies now make excellent laminate which is barely distinguishable from the real thing.
